Day 19, July 4, 2010
Happy Birthday USA! It is a beautiful morning; the temperature is about 75 degrees and the sun is shining. We went to Eskaton Village (the retirement village where Dorothy lives) to pick her up for church and I am writing this while I wait for her to come out to the car. At church, we were treated to special music by a “barber shop” quartet that sang a few patriotic numbers and some hymns. We also sang “God Of Our Fathers” accompanied by the piano and trumpet. Wow! The church was started a number of years ago by a very devout man and 6 people. It now has a sanctuary that will seat probably 450-5oo people. He served communion and it was very meaningful. The sermon was about John Adams, our 2nd president, and is values. According to the pastor, John Adams, who was George Washington’s vice president, was the most intelligent vice president we have ever had. After church, we went to brunch with Dorothy, visited a while and said our “goodbyes” and headed for San Francisco.

As we drove along, I couldn’t help but observe the miles and miles of flowering shrubs in the median between the lanes of highway. They were 10’-15’ tall and beautiful. All of the grass looks dead and brown. The only things green on the hillsides are the trees. We are beginning to see a few palm trees from time to time.

We wanted to see the Golden Gate bridge so we hunted it up on a map and drove across it.

On the way across, we got a look at Alcatraz. There were literally hundreds of people walking across and biking across the bridge.

We drove down to Fisherman’s Wharf and it too was teaming with people and there wasn’t a parking place within miles so we headed for downtown.

The hills in San Francisco are really as steep as they look in the movies. We drove up one street and it really pulled hard. I thought I might need to get out and push to get the van to the top.

We drove around down town a little and headed back to drive along the coast. As we drove along, Floyce got some terrific photos; even these two vintage cars.

The waves are bigger here than they are farther north as they crash into the rocky shorelines and slide silently up the sandy beaches. At Half Moon Bay, CA we turned inland and headed to Los Gatos where we will spend the night.
