Day 17. Friday, July 2, 2010
Today we say goodbye to Oregon. We “slept in” this morning(‘til about 6:30), got up, ate breakfast, went to McDonald’s(we have found that all McDonald’s restaurants are wi-fi hot spots) so I could blog, and finally got on the road about 10:30. Still traveling down highway 101, we drove along the Pacific coast for quite a while. We stopped along a black sand beach to take pictures of the surf. The surf is so relentless, continuallu rushing to the shore.
Just south of Crescent City, CA, we tried to drive through one of the 3 redwoods in California that have roads going through them. I tried but couldn’t quite get the van through because of the width.
We drove past a meadow where elk were grazing and saw a male with large antlers, some cows and a couple of young calves.
On down highway 101 we entered the “Avenue Of The Giants”, a 31 mile drive through giant redwood trees. I cannot think of a way to describe the enormous size of these trees; up to 22’ in diameter and 367’ tall. Because the trees are sooooo tall, it is very shady driving through them, and a little eerie, almost like an enchanted forest. I found one tree near the road that was easy to get around and measured the circumference with a 25’ tape measure. It was 25‘+ 17’ or 42’ total circumference.
From the avenue of the giants, we drove on down to Willits, Ca where we stayed a the Best Western Motel. We ARE in California and it supposed to be warm but it is about 58 degrees, the motel has an outdoor pool and at 9:00 at night there are 3 kids swimming. I would think they would freeze. More tomorrow.
